BaitoneAlpino Suggests: Sant'Ambrogio di Valpolicella

Sant’Ambrogio di Valpolicella is the westernmost municipality in the Valpolicella Classica area and is renowned not only for its wine production but also for its fine marble. Notably, this "Ambrosian" marble was used to construct iconic Verona landmarks such as the Arena, the Roman Theatre, the Ponte della Pietra, and the Madonna Verona fountain in Piazza delle Erbe. A visit to the village of San Giorgio Ingannapoltron—perched on the hill above Sant’Ambrogio—is a must. The village’s name, “Ingannapoltron” (meaning "deceives the lazy"), stems from the fact that its church is clearly visible from almost the entire valley and appears quite close; in reality, however, reaching it requires a 4-kilometer climb up the hill from the town center. Also noteworthy are the historic villas Brenzoni Bassani and Serego-Alighieri—the latter named after the son of the poet Dante Alighieri, who purchased the estate in 1353.
