BaitoneAlpino Suggests: Alpine Botanic Garden viote
The Viote Alpine Botanical Garden is located on Monte Bondone, a popular ski destination in the winter and a hiking destination in the summer. The mountain overlooks Trento, offering an ideal location, well exposed to the south and rich in water from the nearby peat bog. The Garden is one of the oldest and largest Alpine Gardens in Italy, founded in 1938 to promote awareness and protection of Alpine flora. The Viote Alpine Botanical Garden extends over 10 hectares in the Viote plain at an altitude of 1,500 meters. Its historic core occupies approximately 1 hectare and houses a rock garden with alpine plants from the world's major mountain ranges, arranged according to their mountain of origin. A large flowerbed hosts Chinese rhubarb, the first plant cultivated in the garden. The remaining nine hectares include lakes, ponds, wetlands, flowerbeds, a medicinal garden, a mountain vegetable garden, fields dedicated to cereals and ancient Alpine plant varieties, a shrubbery and an arboretum dedicated to priority Alpine habitats and the world's forests, and a lichen trail. In total, approximately 1,500 species are cultivated. The Viote Alpine Botanical Garden is a regional branch of the MUSE of Trento.
