BaitoneAlpino Suggests: Trento
Trento lies in the Adige Valley, a location that has made it a hub of passage and meeting for centuries. The city nestles between the river and the mountains that protect it: Monte Bondone to the west, Paganella to the north, and Marzola and Calisio to the east. Over the centuries, Trento has been a seat of religious and civil power, a border town, and an administrative and university center. Its historic center still retains its Roman layout, but what you immediately notice are the frescoed Renaissance palaces, the cobbled streets, and the churches nestled between one square and another. In just a few minutes, you can step from narrow alleys to wider spaces, home to museums, theaters, and universities. A must-see is the Cathedral of San Vigilio, with its pale stone façade overlooking Piazza Duomo, the Fountain of Neptune, and the Palazzo Pretorio. Beneath the cathedral, the archaeological site of Tridentum—the underground city—tells the story of Trento's Roman origins. Pavements, streets, and building remains help us understand how the city was structured in ancient times. The city is also the heart of a larger region: in a short time, you can climb up to the Viote del Bondone, reach the Valsugana valley, or the side valleys. This connection to the mountains is not only geographical: it is reflected in the food, the markets, the village festivals, and the way the seasons are celebrated. A visit to Buonconsiglio Castle and the MUSE - Science Museum is absolutely not to be missed.
