BaitoneAlpino Suggests: Monte Brione

Mount Brione is a magnificent crescent-shaped rock formation that rises above the lake's edge, in Riva del Garda. Reaching its summit not only offers breathtaking views of the lake, but also a taste of local history. Mount Brione is home to four World War II forts: Forte San Nicolò, Forte Garda, Forte Batteria di Mezzo, and Forte Sant'Alessandro, all visible along a 6 km circular route around the mountain. Starting from Porto San Nicolò, just outside Riva del Garda, head toward the first fort, Forte San Nicolò, and take the concrete steps near the bike path. From here, the climb through the woods begins, ascending steps. You'll find several panoramic viewpoints that will allow you to rest your legs. Don't miss the information boards along the route explaining the local history and habitat. Along this stretch, you can also visit Forte Garda. The trail continues along the ridge, but you'll be safe and protected by a metal fence that will lead you to Forte Batteria di Mezzo, atop Mount Brione at 350 meters above sea level. Climbing to the left, you'll find yourself on a balcony with a beautiful panoramic view. From here, skirt the fort, go down the steps, and take the right-hand path through the woods at the bend. Follow the paved road for a few meters, and at the fork, keep right toward Forte Sant'Alessandro. After the fort, the descent begins along an easy path through the woods, which will lead you to the paved road that will take you back to the port. The trail is open year-round, presents no particular difficulty, and is suitable for children. Just be careful with the steps; they may be too high for younger children and could tire quickly. Always wear comfortable hiking shoes, bring water with you as there are no refreshment points along the trail, and wear sunscreen as you'll be hiking this trail in the summer; some sections are outside the woods and are exposed to the sun. If you'd like to learn more about the Mount Brione Forts or if you'd like to explore the area with a guide, visit the MAG Museo Alto Garda website. Throughout the year, it organizes many events dedicated to this piece of our lake's history.
