Baitone Alpino suggests: Base Tuono

Base Tuono was a missile base of the Italian Air Force and NATO active between 1966 and 1977, it is located in the municipality of Folgaria in Trentino-Alto Adige near the Coe pass, a few hundred meters from the border with the region Veneto. This base represents only one of the three launch sections of the old structure, and represents the highest in altitude of the 12 that the Air Force built in the 1960s in the north-east. Its function was to counter any formations of enemy bombers or missiles coming from "enemy countries", i.e. those belonging to the Warsaw Pact. After many years of abandonment and as part of a renaturalization project for the area, in 2003 the municipal administration of Folgaria opted for the protection of one of the three launch sections of the former base, and on 3 October 2010 presented the first step in museum setup. The guard tower, now on display at Tuono base, represents an area which in turn housed Alpha or Bravo sections, where nuclear missiles were kept. These areas, in addition to being double fenced, were patrolled by the Air Force Surveillance. The bunker contained the useful instrumentation for a possible launch; the section panel, the control and missile launch equipment were located here. It consisted of an entrance corridor, an exit corridor and a central compartment all closed by armored doors. In the corridors there were a total of four cots to be able to withstand a prolonged attack. The hangar houses a Nike-Hercules training missile, its precursor the Nike Ajax missile, a generator, a converter, three video stations, some illustrative panels of the weapon system, the geographical location of all the Nike-Hercules bases that were made in Italy and their historical context. Some uniforms of the time complete the display. The base represents an important historical testimony of the Great War, the Second World War and the Cold War. The base offers educational visits to schools, groups or individuals, upon reservation.
